Statement on the Supreme Court’s Decision to Uphold Texas Law SB8

"GW College Democrats express their frustration and outrage at the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision to deny ACLU Texas’ emergency request to block Texas’ abortion ban.

"On September 1, 2021, Texas passed Senate Bill 8 effectively banning abortions after six weeks, making no exception for rape or incest. Texas law SB8 is the first six-week ban to go into effect and is one of the strictest abortion laws in the nation. Texas’ abortion ban will disproportionately impact black and brown communities and low-income individuals due to the challenges of seeking necessary reproductive care. Texas law SB8 additionally targets and directly affects members of the LGBTQIA+ community. This is an unconstitutional attack on Roe v. Wade.

"GW College Democrats are unequivocally committed to defending Roe v. Wade. We encourage you to call your Representatives and demand that they support abortion access legislation.

“The Court’s order is stunning. Presented with an application to enjoin a flagrantly unconstitutional law engineered to prohibit women from exercising their constitutional rights and evade judicial scrutiny, a majority of Justices have opted to bury their heads in the sand.”
